Mars Landing Site Named for Octavia Butler

Before this past one-week break began, I had never heard of Octavia Butler. But as the vacation days went by, at least three times -- from different sources -- I was exposed to something that made me think of her. I learned that her most famous work was the story of a modern young black woman who time-traveled back to before the Civil War. Her mission was to make sure her great great grand father actually meets up with her great great grand mother. And, wow, -- many plot-twists, and adventures. Later in this past week, I read a review of some of her recent work. The Universe was telling me I should share her legacy with my honored students. Before she died, she won an award called the MacArthur Genius Grant. Its a career changing award that also comes with $265,000. with 'no strings attached'.
