Stars and Brightness
Fill in the blank with the correct word. There are two stars that are the same size and age. One is named Alpha and one is named Beta. Alpha is located much CLOSER to Earth than Beta. Alpha will appear brighterthan Beta. Read the information about stars and planets and then sort them into the proper categories. Stars and planets are both objects in outer space and they may look very similar from Earth but they are actually very different. First of all, stars produce their own light because they are undergoing nuclear reactions in their very centers that cause them to burn hydrogen. Planets do not do this. Planets reflect the light of stars. Stars form when gases come together and collapse in on each other due to gravity. Planets form when dust and ice come together around a star that already exists. Planets are much smaller than stars. You can fit over 900 Jupiters into our sun! {Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system}. Star produce own light burn hydrogen relatively large Planets do not produce light made of rock and ice relatively small Fill in the blanks with words from the word bank. Because stars are defined at natural bodies that give off their own light and the sun is a natural body that gives off its own light, therefore the sun is considered a star. The sun is many times greater than the Earth but appears small because it is very far away. Even though the sun is very far from Earth, it is much closer than other stars. Because the sun is closer to Earth than any other star, it appears much larger and brighter than any other star in the sky. The farther objects are from a viewer, the smaller and dimmer they will appear. This is why immensely large stars will appear smaller and dimmer than other stars - they are very far away. The sun is closer to Earth than any other star so it appears much larger and brighter than any other star in the sky. Stars that are much larger and brighter than the sun seem much smaller and dimmer because they are much, much farther away from Earth. Stars are much larger than Earth. Stars closer to Earth will appear brighter and stars farther away from Earth will appear dimmer.
