When Garvey explains the different Circles to Cole, Cole asked if Peter’s family would help determine the sentencing. Cole says, “They’ll hang me…I’m dead.” Garvey replies, “I think you’ve already hung yourself.” What do you think Garvey means by this statement? Cole's choices have already had a negative impact on his life. Cole is going to be sentenced to death by a court of law. Cole will be put on suicide watch after this circle. Cole may have made some bad choices, but at his core he is a good person. It is obvious that Cole is nervous and upset when the Hearing Circle begins. Why do you think Cole gives a threatening look to Peter at the beginning of the Circle if it's obvious he doesn’t feel confident? It's Cole's default behavior- he doesn't ever want to seem scared so he tries to scare others. Peter made threatening looks at him first. Part of the Hearing Circle is making faces at others. Cole is confident that he can scare Peter into dropping the charges against him. According to the Keeper, why does regular justice often fail? Because it seeks to heal. Because it seeks to rehabilitate. Because it seeks to punish. Because it seeks keep people locked up. What are the TWO obligations of the circle? Choose TWO. The water is too cold. He isn't a very good swimmer. The tide keeps pulling him back. He can't swim over the waves. What is the one item that didn't get burned in the fire Cole started? His food supply. The at'oow. His extra clothing. The school work he is supposed to do while on the island. Why does Cole break the feather rule and interrupt his father at the end of the chapter? His dad is lying and it makes Cole angry. He really wants everyone to know he agrees with his father. He's tired of hearing Peter whine about how hurt he is. His dad isn't saying anything so Cole tries to tell his side of the story. Draw a picture of an important event from these chapters. Make sure to include a caption that describes your drawing.
