Photosynthesis and Respiration
Dive into photosynthesis! Discover how plants make their own food, turning sunlight into life-sustaining energy.
Read It! What do you need to survive? Food, shelter, and water. That’s what animals need, too. But plants are a little bit different. They need water and the energy they get from food, but they don’t eat as we do. They use a process called photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, plants make food in the form of sugar and produce oxygen. Photo means “light” and synthesis means to “put together.”There are three reactants needed for a plant to make its own food. A reactant is what is needed for a reaction to take place. The reactants needed to create food for the plant to survive are water, carbon dioxide, and energy from the sun.Chlorophyll in the leaves of a green plant absorbs sunlight. Chlorophyll is a green pigment that allows the plant to absorb sunlight. It is found in the chloroplasts of the leaf. Chloroplasts are the organelles where photosynthesis takes place and is only found in plant cells. The plant obtains water and nutrients from the soil. They are absorbed through the xylem and phloem of the plant’s roots, stems, and leaves. Carbon dioxide from the air enters the plant through the stomata on the underside of the leaves. The three reactants Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ), water(H2O), plus light energy produce the food the plants need to survive and grow. The products of photosynthesis are glucose in the form of sugar and oxygen. Products are substances that are formed in a chemical reaction.Without the process of photosynthesis, plants wouldn’t survive. Without plants, animals and humans couldn’t survive! The chemical equation for photosynthesis is written: What does the word photosynthesis mean? Light + Energy Energy + Mass Light + Put Together Energy + sugar Which of these are the reactants in the photosynthesis equation? CO2 and Water O2 and Sugar Energy and CO2 Sunlight and sugar What are the products in the photosynthesis equation? O2 and energy CO2 and O2 Glucose and O2 O2 and Sunlight Products Substances that are formed in a chemical reaction. During photosynthesis, radiant (or light) energy is converted into what kind of energy? Xylem helps plants deliver water and nutrients to the entire plant. What human body system is this like? Explain why photosynthesis is much slower in underwater plants. Research It! Press PLAY to watch the process of photosynthesis. There is no sound. Watch it 2 or 3 times and look for key vocabulary words. Describe the steps of photosynthesis using information from the animation. BE SPECIFIC!!! I want STEP by STEP.Hint: Follow the video above. Draw a picture of a green plant that shows what happens in the leaf during photosynthesis. Add arrows to indicate the directions the reactants and products move.Include these words in your diagram:- Carbon dioxide- Oxygen- Water- Sun’s energy- Glucose (sugar or carbohydrates) Assess it! Which of the following does not happen during photosynthesis? O2 is given off. Glucose is made. The Sun's energy is reflected Chlorophyll absorbs the Sun’s energy. Which is the correct (unbalanced) equation for photosynthesis? H2O + 🌞 ➡ CO2+ O2 02+ H2O → Sugar + Energy CO2+ H2O + 🌞 ➡ Sugar + O2 Which is not an example of radiant energy? Energy from _. a light bulb a heating pad on your back the Sun The green color of leaves. When we look at a plant, we notice that the leaves are green. This is due to the chlorophyllin the leaves that allows the plant to absorb sunlight. Plants use the light energy in a reaction called photosynthesiswhere they make food in the form of sugar and produce oxygen. Chloroplasts, which are only found in plant cells, are where the food-making reaction takes place. In this reaction: water, carbon dioxide, and energy from the sun are needed for the reaction and are called reactants. The things that are formed in the reaction, or the products, are sugar and oxygen.
