Our old fairy tales are an example. We know they aren't real because animals or toys talk, magical things happen, people have unusual powers, or they are very big or small. Many of these tales passed from one generation to the next. It was common for a family or group of friends to gather by the fire after dark and tell these imaginative stories. From these fairy tales of the past grew modern American fantasy stories. The Borrowers by Mary Norton is a fantasy about tiny creatures who "borrow" things from the human "beans" with whom they live. To Arrietty, the miniature girl in the story, a round tennis ball looks huge! Trouble develops when the Borrowers are "discovered" by the big human beings. The Borrowers must flee for their lives. Then there is a surprise ending that leads to its sequel, The Borrowers Afield. Can you name another modern fantasy?
