What are fossils? Fossils are preserved remains of ancient life or evidence of life. ie: skeletal remains, shells, footprints, worm burrows, etc. By observing fossils we can compare past animals to today and learn how animals lived and behaved long ago!How do fossils form?1. The life form must be buried- the longer that this takes the worse the condition of the fossil due to elements and scavengers.2. There are many conditions that need to be perfect for fossilization to occur. Below are some things that need to be taken into account. -soft tissue do not fossilize -type of sediment -minerals -erosionAdapted from: Finding fossils Review: What are fossils? dead organisms preserved organisms or evidence of life live organisms in a zoo scavengers True or False: All tissues can fossilize easily to be observed. True False What two resources can help you to locate land that may have fossils? a globe Google maps geologic map a lab Sometimes fossils can be found accidentally. The mammoth fossils in Colorado were found when they were: building a dam digging for the foundation of a house flying over the area tripping over the fossil Which term refers to a scientist who studies the fossil record and the history of life? Paleontologist Biologist Chemist Astronomer The excavation process: Which of the following tools is NOT used by a paleontologist? Chisel Hammer Brush Saw When discussing the type of landscapes some are said to be indurated, what does this mean? sandy soft hard underwater True or False: Finding fossils is a quick, easy process. True False Entire Process: 1. Prospect: find the best site to dig2. Excavate: use tools to locate fossils3. Map the site: once you find fossil you want to estimate the area of excavation4. Plaster cast: after the fossil is removed you want to protect and preserve for transport5. Pack up: bring fossils back to analyzeModified from: Examples of fossils: Dinosaur bone:Coprolite:Shark Vertebrae:Ammonite:Clam:Corax shark tooth:Fish chips:Mosasaur tooth:Otodus tooth:Pink Gastropod:Stingray tooth:Sand dollar: Ready to excavate your fossil??? Step 1: Collect materials- fossil brick (presoaked for 5 min), chisel paper towelStep 2: Place your brick on the paper towel and use the chisel to slowly break away rockStep 3: When the fossil is in site carefully use the chisel and brush to expose the entire fossilStep 4: Break away the rock until the fossil is freeStep 5: Identify your fossil based on the examples of fossils above. Which fossil did you excavate? Describe what your fossil looks like in detail. If you are unsure of what your fossil is look it up! Research two interesting facts about your fossil and list them below:
