Ethics and Values 4Term grade 6
Self-Esteem Matters Here are three things to know about self-esteem:Self-esteem helps you. It gives you the courage to try new things. Or make new friends. With self-esteem, you believe in yourself. You know that good things can happen when you try. Self-esteem helps you when things don't go your way. It helps you accept mistakes. If you miss the soccer goal or lose a library book, you don't get too mad at yourself. You just try again. You find a way to do better.Low self-esteem can hurt you. It makes kids feel unsure. They don't think they can do things well. With low self-esteem, kids might not try. They might not go after their goals. They might be afraid to fail. Low self-esteem makes losing seem worse than it is. It makes mistakes seem bigger than they are. It makes it hard to get over things that don't go well. Instead of trying again, kids with low self-esteem might give up.You can build your self-esteem. Self-esteem can start with things parents say when a kid is very young. A parent might tell a baby, "Look what you can do — you're walking all by yourself!" Being told good things makes the baby feel proud and feel good. As you get older, self-esteem can grow. Parents and teachers can let you know they see good things in you. Friends can help you feel liked. You can build your own self-esteem too. Notice when you try new things. Notice when you learn to do something. Did you try a new sport? Did you learn to ride a bike, play a song, or do a math problem? Be happy and proud. You don't have to brag out loud, but you can give yourself a quiet little high-five. Yay, you! Self-Esteem -how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourselfSelf-Awareness being aware of different aspects of the self including traits, behaviors, and feelings BENEFTIS OF HEALTHY SELF-ESTEEM Healthy Self-Esteem Helps You:- feel proud of yourself and your abilities, skills, and accomplishments- have the confidence to confront challenges and overcome them- have the confidence to try new things Read the text and Sort the characteristics below into the correct category. HIGH SELF-ESTEEM LOW SELF-ESTEEM Believe in themselves, even when they don't do well at first Think more about the times they fail, than the times they do well Accept themselves, even when they make mistakes Don’t think they are as good as others Are hard on themselves and give up easily. SELF-AWARENESS In other words, when you focus on yourself, rather than your environment, you compare yourself with your standards of correctness. These standards of correctness specify how you ought to think, feel, and behave. They are, essentially, your values and beliefs, otherwise known as your ideals. You feel pride or dissatisfaction depending on how well your behavior matches up with your standards of correctness. If you’re dissatisfied, you might make changes to your behavior to better align with your standards. For instance, you might note feelings of discontent in your current role, and recognize you value creativity but don’t have the opportunity to exercise that passion. That dissatisfaction could lead you to pursue other creative outlets, changing your behavior to fit your standards.Self-awareness, then, is a fundamental tool for self-control.Make sense? One more thing.Tasha Eurich, a researcher and organizational psychologist, and her team of researchers came up with two categories of self-awareness, which I think are important to note: internal self-awareness, and external self-awareness.Internal self-awareness is something I’ve already mentioned -- it is how clearly you see your values, passions, and aspirations, and how well those standards fit with your environment and your reactions (which include thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses).Essentially, internal self-awareness is recognizing your current job doesn’t match your true passion for marketing, or feeling dissatisfied with a heated conversation you had with your colleague, which conflicts with your belief that kindness is important.External self-awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to clearly see how other people view you. People who know how others see them are typically more empathetic. Leaders who can see how their employees view them are usually more effective, and have stronger relationships with their employees.External self-awareness is recognizing your employee took your feedback personally because of your tone, or realizing your employees are disheartened by the data provided in your last email. DEVELOPING SELF-AWARENESS Understanding your needs and meeting them in healthy ways will help you reach your highest potential. What does self-awareness mean to you? (25 words) The best way to increase your confidence after you have failed at something is to: Immediately quit. Obviously you'll never be good at it, so you should just give up Find someone else to blame... it's best if the failure wasn't your fault Acknowledge your failure, figure out what went wrong, think of different strategies or get some advice on how to be more successful, then try again Switch to doing something you know you are good at, and then stick to doing only the things that you are certain you will find success Building Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness Recognize and accept when you might need help. This is especially true when you are learning something new Ask for help Divide your larger goals into smaller goals. You can build on each smaller success to reach your overall goal. Set realistic goals A positive attitude can help you be more confident. Being positive also helps you relate better to others. You're likely to be more honest and to respect others' life experiences. Think positively Everyone has different abilities. Identify your weaknesses without judging yourself and make a solid effort to improve them. If others give you constructive feedback, try to learn from it. Remember that no one is perfect Find something you like to do such as a hobby, school activity, or sport. Work to improve your skills. Try to enjoy yourself, even when you make mistakes. Focus on your strengths
