Identify whether each sentence is active or passive. 1. The sound of chopping was heard far and wide. Active Passive 2. He chopped down the tree with many blows of his axe. Active Passive 3. No one heard the tree fall, however. Active Passive 4. But it was heard by several chipmunks and one woodpecker. Active Passive 5. The tree was then cut into planks and then sold. Active Passive 6. People all over the city used the planks to build houses. Active Passive 7. This caused a boom in the real estate market. Active Passive 8. As a result, the woodsman was hailed as a local hero. Active Passive Copy the passage below. Put brackets around all the passive verbs, and underline all the subjects of the passive verbs. One of my worst days was the day I was scared by the train. George had asked me to go to the convenience store with him. He had been seized by a sudden need for nachos. So off we went. We had entered the tracks on the bridge when suddenly a loud whistle was heard a long way off. Soon we were overcome with fear and ran for our lives. But I ran a bit slower than George, and the engineer had to apply the breaks. As soon as they were engaged the train left the tracks. Sure enough, it headed for the convenience store, and in the twinkling of an eye the store was flattened by the train. No nachos for George! Copy the passage and put brackets around every phrase that would be an Abl of agent in Latin. Remember that not every use of the word "by" equals an Abl of agent! Our town used to be routinely raided by pirates. They would come by ship, would disembark, and would proceed to sack and pillage. My house was pillaged by a huge pirate whose parrot had an eye patch. “What happened to the parrot?” I asked. The pirate replied, “In the last town we pillaged he was attacked by a birdwatcher. I had to wait by a tree until it was over.” At this I was seized by fear, because a one-eyed parrot can be rather mean. But the pirate was polite, and I’d rather be pillaged by a polite pirate than by a birdwatcher. Write the correct person and number for the given passive personal ending, as well as the English personal pronoun associated with each ending.
