Basic parts of the Sewing Machine
This worksheet will assist you to familiarise yourself with the basic functions of the Bernina B335 sewing machine that you will be using here at CMCC. This sewing machine has many more functions that can be utilised, but let's keep it simple for now! Fill in the blanks below to demonstrate your understanding of basic safety when using the sewing machine. Before setting up your sewing machine, it is important to complete a quick visual check in order to identify any hazards.1. Ensure your workspace is uncluttered.2. Check the power cords are in good working order with no frays or damage to it's protective coating.3. Check the needle is inserted correctly and is undamaged.4. Always gather your tools before set up: bobbin, thread, scissors, and bobbin case. That way you will not need to leave your machine unattended.There are a number of safety rules we follow including:1. Only one person is allowed to be near a machine at any one time. This minimises the risk of needle injuries should somebody bump you or tread on the foot pedal.2. Unplug the machine from its power source when threading, replacing needles or completing any activity other than sewing.3. Always unthread, then rethread the machine completely at the beginning of your session, to ensure that it has been done properly.4. If you leave the machine temporarily, turn it off at the power switch and place the foot pedal on the table.5. If something goes wrong, stop sewing immediately and notify your teacher, then wait patiently for assistance.6. When finished sewing, tidy away all materials, scraps, pins and cords in their appropriate locations. You may leave the thread in the machine, but stack it neatly, with the foot pedal on the trolley.Finally- remember that no loose hair or clothing must be in contact within the vicinity of the machine.
