While he was dictator (49-44B.C.E.), he did many things to help better Rome. Helping the common people with debt Caesar helped fix many of Rome's economic issues such as debt and unemployment. After the outbreak of the civil war and Caesar became dictator, there was a large amount of damage to the city, and not enough money to pay for the repairs. To fix this, Caesar created laws to help rebuild the city, such as any one person not being allowed to hold more than 60,000 acres of land. He also ordered that property must be accepted for repayment at its pre-war value. Doing this helped pay to rebuild. Caesar also helped the common people get out of debt by removing all interest payments due since the beginning of 49 B.C.E., and allowed tenants to pay no rent for one year. Doing so did not remove all the debt that Rome was in, but it was a great help to the city as a whole and satisfied everyone.Unemployment and overcrowding Not only was there a large amount of debt in Rome, there was also a problem with unemployment and overcrowding. Since Rome was one of the biggest cities in the world at the time, there was bound to be poor people and unemployment, but the issue was very serious when Caesar was dictator. To reduce the amount of unemployment and overcrowding in Rome, Caesar allowed the poor people to travel overseas and start a new life in one of Rome's other colonies. To help those who stayed behind, Caesar had a massive amount of grain imported. He allowed for better access to grain by creating a new harbors and making it cheaper for the people. New public buildings help unemployment Caesar constructing new public buildings helped Rome as a whole. The newly constructed buildings reduced the amount of unemployment in Rome by a significant amount giving jobs to thousands of unemployed Romans. It also made the city more appealing to live in, as he realized after visiting Alexandria in Egypt that Rome looked far less appealing compared to it. Caesar ordered the construction of Forum Julium, (also known as the Forum of Caesar) The Forum of Caesar originally meant an expansion of the Forum Romanum. Eventually, it evolved into a place for public business and a shrine for Julius Caesar himself.
