Reviewing the New Deal The New Deal was a BIG deal, so its important for us to make sure we know what happened during this time period. Start today by watching these two videos. Problems Created by the Great Depression The New Deal Solutions Now, sort the details of the 1930s below into two categories: Great Depression Problems and New Deal Solutions. Remember, the problems are the negative factors affecting Americans and the solutions are the relief created by the government to help. Great Depression Problems The Dust Bowl destroyed thousands of acres of farm land. Banks failed after the Stock Market Crash. Herbert Hoover did not use the federal government to help. The stock market crashed in 1929. Thousands of people lost their jobs and homes. New Deal Solutions President Franklin D. Roosevelt uses the federal government to create relief programs for Americans. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) created jobs and helped to prevent future damage to farmland. The Social Security Act provides relief for disabled worker and retired people. The Works Projects Administration (WPA) provides jobs to more than 8 million unemployed Americans. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is created to help regulate the stock market. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was formed to regulate the stock market. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insured bank deposits. Americans who put money into the bank were guaranteed that money despite changes in the economy. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) gave conservation jobs to more than two million young men. The Public Works Administration (PWA) built bridges, tunnels, libraries, schools, and roads for public use. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built dams and hydroelectric plants along the Tennessee River. FDR passed the Social Security Act (SSA) to establish retirement funds, unemployment benefits, and welfare benefits for the elderly, children, and the disabled. FDR wanted to use the federal government to focus on the three Rs: Relief, Recovery, and Reform. In the puzzle, find the abbreviations for his reforms and programs created by the New Deal.
