Push Factors There were several disease epidemics in the eastern part of the United States including typhoid, tuberculosis, scarlet fever, and yellow fever. Some people, such as the Mormons, were being persecuted for their faith in the eastern United States. They decided to leave for religious freedom. A depression in 1837 ruined many farmers. Pull Factors Some people wanted to go on adventures. Publications and guidebooks of the time boasted of Oregon's lush farmlands and California's goldfields. President Polk declared that it was America's "Manifest Destiny" to settle North America from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
