Using the steam to turn the paddles of the boat meant that the boat could easily travel both upstream and downstream.TrainsThe invention of trains was a big improvement over stagecoaches for transporting goods and people. Trains were more reliable and could travel faster.AirplanesThe Wright brothers built the first working airplane. The first successful flight took place on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, N.C.. The flight traveled 120 feet.AutomobileHenry Ford was not the first person to build an automobile, but he helped automobiles become popular by building cars that most people could afford.TrucksSemi-trucks can carry just about any product that you can think of. Today, more than 80 percent of our state’s cities get all of their goods delivered by trucks. This development in transportation means that our communities no longer need to be near a river or a railroad.Space TravelNorth Carolina is focused on the future of transportation and space travel through the development of the Space Grant Consortium, which provides money to universities that study space travel.
