Master the respiratory system! Anatomy, function, and labeling. Perfect for high school science.

Respiratory System Video A. Fill-in-the-Blanks - After watching the video above, please fill in the blanks with the correct term. The gas that we breathe in is oxygen. The gas that we breathe out is carbon dioxide. Breathing happens automatically. Everyday, the body breathes about 20,000 times. We need oxygen to carry out the process of respiration so that we can generate energy. At the top of the respiratory system, the nostrils bring air into the body. Tiny hairs, called cilia, protect the nasal passageway by filtering out particles. The pharynx, which lies at the back of the throat, carries both air and food. A small flap of tissue called the epiglottis, covers the air tube, or trachea, as we swallow so that food and liquids don't get into our lungs. The larynx, or voicebox, is located at the top of the trachea. As the trachea extends downward, it branches into a right and left bronchus. Those bronchi then branch even further into bronchioles, which eventually lead to tiny air sacs of the lungs, called alveoli. B. Labelling - Respiratory System nose mouth larynx lung right bronchus diaphragm pharynx left bronchus bronchiole alveoli trachea C. Respiratory System Matching Match each structure of the respiratory system on the left with its correct function on the right. Trachea Carries air to the lungs Larynx Produces our voice Alveoli Allows oxygen to move into the blood stream Lungs The essential organ of the respiratory system Diaphragm Muscle that helps to expand and contract the lungs D. Multiple Choice 1. Which of the following is the job of the respiratory system? Holding up the body and giving it support and shape Gas exchange between the external environment and the body's circulatory system. Breaking down food into nutrients for it to be used by the body Expelling wastes and removing undigested materials 2. Small air sacs in the lungs where many capillaries exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen taken into the body are known as...? Bronchi Trachea Alveoli Arterioles 3. What is the anatomical name for the windpipe? Larynx Esophagus Pharynx Trachea 4. What structure closes to ensure that food goes down the correct tube and does not enter into your lungs? Larynx Glottis Pharynx Epiglottis 5. What do we call the air spaces in the skull that help to regulate temperature and humidity of the air we take into our bodies? Sinuses Adenoids Tonsils Alveoli 6. What is the anatomical name of the voice box? Pharynx Larynx Epiglottis Alveoli 7. What muscle separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and helps regulate breathing? Internal intercostal External intercostal Diaphragm Phrenic 8. Which of the following is affected by the respiratory system? Yawn Hiccup Sneeze All of these 9. What is responsible for picking up the oxygen in the lungs and carrying it to all the body cells that need it? Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Plasma 10. What do we call the tiny microscopic hairs that help to keep mucus, dirt, and debris out of your lungs? Villi Cilia Microvilli Bronchioles 11. In this image, the swimmer is taking a large breath in. Which of the following occurs during inhalation? The pressure in the lungs is lower than the external environment The pressure in the lungs is greater than the external environment The alveoli are constricted and external intercostal muscles are relaxed The diaphragm is relaxed and ribs are recoiled
