Types of Chemical Reactions In this video, you will be introduced to the different types of chemical reactions.Pay attention while watching it, stop and rewatch any part you do not understand. Watch the following video then answer the attached questions. Identifying characteristic of the 5 main types of chemical reactions. Practice identifying the unique reactant(s) and product(s) of each of the 5 main types of chemical reactions by matching the characteristic to the correct type of chemical reaction. Synthesis Reaction Two or more reactants combine to create one large product. Single Replacement Reaction The reactants are an element and a compound and the element switches places with one of the elements in the compound to create the new products which are also one element and one compound. Combustion Reaction One of the reactants is always oxygen gas and the products always include water and carbon dioxide gas. Double Replacement Reaction The reactants are two different compounds and one element in each of the compounds switch places with each other to create the two new products that are also two different compounds. Decomposition Reaction One large reactant breaks down to create two or more products. Sort the chemical equations by the reaction type. Synthesis Fe + S8 → FeS Fe (s) + O2 (g) → Fe2O3 (s) SO3 + H2O → H2SO4 Decomposition HgO→ Hg+O2 CaCO3→CaO+CO2 NaOH→Na2O+H2O H2CO3→CO2+H2O Combustion C3H8+ O2→ CO2+ H2O C6H12O6+ O2→ CO2+ H2O(g) Single Replacement Ag+H2S→Ag2S+H2 Mg+Cu(NO3)2→Mg(NO3)2 + Cu Zn+HCl →ZnCl2+H2 Double Replacement KI+Pb(NO3)2→KNO3+PbI2 NaCN+HBr→NaBr+HCN
