Primary succession takes place on land where there are no living organisms, like after a volcanic eruption. The first species to live in the area, once cooled off, are called pioneer species. Secondary succession is a pattern of change that takes place after an existing community is destroyed, such as a wildfire. After time passes, little or no change occurs – when this is the case, this community is called a climax community.
