All matter has two things in common. It can pour and takes up space. It takes up space and has mass. It is a solid. It has mass and takes up the container it is in. Match the states of matter to the definition. Solid Has mass and takes up space, and holds its own shape. Liquid Has mass and takes up space, and takes the shape of the container it is in usually sinking to the bottom. Gas Has mass and takes up space, and takes up the whole container it is in. Fill in the blanks Water is a great way to show how adding heat or cold to matter can change it. When I add heat to water it evaporates and becomes water vapor. When water vapor cools it condenses and becomes water again. If I add heat to ice it melts and becomes water, but if I add cold again it freezes and becomes a solid ice cube again. Tell me which group each of these things belongs in. Reversible Change mix up my marbles make fruit salad a jar full of pennies and dimes Irreversible Change burning wood cooking eggs baking a cake
