Fill in the blank using vocabulary from this unit. Soundis a form of energyassociated with the vibration of matter. Vibrationsoccur when matter moves back and forth quickly. Sound is considered to be a longitudinal wave, which means the particles of the mediumvibrate. A longitudinal wave has compressions, where there is a reduction in volume and atoms compress, and rarefactions; where atoms are not compressed. The number of waves that pass a point in a given amount of time is called frequency. The frequency is measured in hertz and impacts the pitch of the sound. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. Loudness of a sound wave is based on the amplitude. Loudnessrefers to how intense the sound is. For example, a train passing by has a high amplitudeand we know that because the sound is very loud. Loudness is measured in decibels.Remember: Sound can be reflected just like light can be. When sound is reflected we call it an ECHO!!! Manipulating the Sound Wave Match the properties of the sound wave we changed to how we would hear it. High Pitch (screaming) High Frequency Loud sounding High Amplitude Soft sounding Low Amplitude Low Pitch (whisper) Low Frequency Increasing the loudness Increasing the Amplitude Whats the Pitch? Label the rubber bands 1-5 (5 being the lowest pitch) for which band would have lowest to highest pitch when plucked. 1 2 3 4 5 Ear Diagram Label the parts of the ear. Make sure you spell the parts of the ear correctly. Outer Ear Hammer Anvil Auditory Nerve Eardrum Cochlea Stirrup Ear Canal What is inside the cochlea that helps us hear? (Once it is broken or damaged it is NEVER repaired) open spaces cartilage antennas cilia Which of the following statements are TRUE factors that impact the speed of how sound travels? If the medium is solid, sound travels the fastest through because the atoms can vibrate. The hotter the temperature, the slower sound travels. The hotter the temperature, the faster sound travels. Sound travels the fastest through gas. When atoms are compact, sound will travel faster. When atoms are not compact, sound will travel faster. Sound in outer space travels the fastest. Sound needs a medium to be able to travel. Light or Sound? Sort the below words into either Sound or Light. Light Transverse Does not need a medium Fastest through gas Faster Sound Longitudinal Needs a medium Fastest through solid Slower Longitudinal Wave Label the parts of the wave. (Compression, Rarefaction, Wavelength) wavelength compression rarefaction
