Layers of the Atmosphere REVIEW
Label the layers of the atmosphere on the diagram. SPELLING COUNTS! Word bank: Thermosphere, Stratosphere, Troposphere, Mesosphere Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere Thermosphere Match each layer of the atmosphere with its description. mesosphere Layer of the atmosphere where meteors burn; coldest, middle layer. troposphere Lowest part of the atmosphere; Highest air pressure of all layers; weather occurs here. stratosphere Ozone layer and jet stream found here. thermosphere Largest layer with the least amount of air pressure; hottest of all the layers. Ozone Layer part of stratosphere with oxygen3 gas molecules that absorbs UV from the Sun Match each vocabulary word with its definition. atmosphere A mixture of gases (known as air) that surrounds the Earth like a blanket. aurora Bands of colored light in the night sky caused by charged particles. ozone Poisonous form of oxygen(O3); produced naturally. U light Invisible electromagnetic waves; causes sunburn. The air you breathe is made of many different things. Almost 80% of it is nitrogen gas. The rest is mostly oxygen, the gas we need to live. There is also water in the atmosphere. Some of it is invisible, in the form of a gas called water vapor.Air pressure is how much the air above you weighs. As you move up from the ground and out toward space, there are fewer gas molecules pressing down from above. Therefore, the air pressure drops. The higher you go, the lower the air pressure gets.Like air pressure, air temperature changes as you move higher in the atmosphere. Air pressure always gets lower as you move higher, but air temperature can get higher or lower.
