Crust Hard and rigid, it's the earth's outermost layer. Only a few miles (5 km) thick under the oceans and averaging 20 miles (30 km) thick under the continents. This is the thinnest layer. Mantle Divided into two regions, upper and lower. Dense layer made of hot, semisolid rock. Directly below the crust and is about 1,800 miles (2,900 km) thick. Outer Core The only liquid layer of the Earth. A sea of mostly iron and nickel. About 1,400 miles (2,300 km) thick. Inner Core About 750 miles (1,200 km) in diameter. Extremely hot, center of the earth. Densest layer, solid sphere of mostly iron and nickel. The lithosphere is a rigid layer made up of the crust and upper mantle. The asthenosphere is the middle portion of the mantle, extremely dense. Density is the amount of mass an object has per unit of volume. Crust Least Dense, Top Layer Mantle Semisolid, Below Crust Outer Core Dense Liquid, Iron & nickel Inner Core Densest, Center of Earth Earth's Layers Draw a model showing the layers of the Earth. Include the inner and out mantle, inner and outer core, and the crust. Earth's Layers Label the Inner Core, Crust, Outer Core, and Mantle Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core
