Read the information to complete the tasks that follow and to answer the questions. Trees can be divided into two main groups: Conifers, or coniferous, and Deciduous.Deciduous trees are angiosperms, meaning they are a flowering plant that produces seeds inside a fruit. These trees have green, broad, flat leaves. The leaves stay green all spring and summer. In the fall, the leaves of deciduous trees will change color from green to red, yellow, orange, gold, etc. and then fall off the tree. For example the leaves of the tulip, hickory, and sycamore trees turn yellow in the fall; the leaves of the sugar maple, and red maple trees turn red in the fall; the leaves of the white oak, and sassafras trees turn orange in the fall; and the leaves of the dogwood tree turn maroon in the fall. The leaves will grow back each spring. Deciduous trees have flowers that are pollinated by the wind or insects and produce seeds inside a fruit. The fruits falls or is eaten and distributed by an animal. Deciduous trees make a variety of fruits (with the seeds inside) i.e. apple trees-apples, maple trees-samaras, oak trees - acorns, birch trees make cone-like fruit called strobile, cottonwood trees make seeds on fuzzy parachutes.Conifers are gymnosperms, which means they are a plant that do not produce seeds enclosed in fruit, instead they are enclosed in a cone. These trees have leaves that are green needles. Most coniferous trees are evergreens, keeping their green needles all year long, except tamaracks Conifers have cones that drop at certain times of the year. Female cones carry the seeds. Male cones release pollen. At certain times each year, pollen is released and sent by the wind to find the seeds. The seed cones are pollinated producing fertile seeds. When the cones are dropped or harvested by animals, seeds dropped into the soil produce new conifers. 1. Properties of Deciduous Trees and Coniferous Trees Classify the properties as one of a deciduous tree or coniferous tree by clicking on the properties (angiosperm, seeds are found in cones, etc) and choosing the correct option. Properties of Deciduous Trees have flowers seeds are in a fruit green leaves spring and summer only angiosperm leaves change color from green to red, yellow, orange in the fall green, broad, flat leaves lose their leaves every fall, then grow back in spring Properties of Coniferous Trees seeds are found in cones gymnosperm evergreens, keeping green needles all year long leaves are green needles cones drop at certain times of the year seeds are not in a fruit 2. Which is true of deciduous trees? they have green needles and cones that fall off the tree in the fall they have broad flat leaves that fall off the tree in the fall they have green needles and cones that stay on the tree all year long they have broad flat leaves that stay on the tree all year long 3. Classifying trees as deciduous trees or coniferous trees. Classify the images of the cutting from trees as a deciduous or coniferous tree by clicking on the images and choosing the correct option. You may need to zoom in to see the images better. Deciduous Trees Coniferous Trees 5.
