Physical Properties Read the Following Text:Classifying Matter Everything is made up of matter. All matter has physical properties.Relative density is a property of matter. Relative density is a physical property that describes whether an object sinks or floats in water. If the object is more dense than water, it will sink. If the object is less dense than water, it will float.Solubility is another physical property of matter. Solubility depends on the amount of the substance and the temperature of the water. Warm water will allow some substances to dissolve faster. Salt dissolves in room temperature water, but dissolves faster in warmer water. Here is the tricky part! Once dissolved, the salt is invisible (cannot be seen). If you taste the water, you will know the salt is there. Some substances will not dissolve in water. We say these substances are insoluble (unable to be dissolved).Remember: Physical properties are characteristics (qualities we observe) used to describe something. Everything is made up of matter. All matter has properties.Conduction is an object’s ability to transfer (pass along) thermal energy (heat energy) or electrical energy (electricity). Conduction is a physical property which can be tested. Conductors are objects that allow thermal or electrical energy to easily flow through them. Most metals are good conductors. Copper is one of the best conductors of thermal and electrical energy. Tools Conduction is a physical property that can be observed using tools. A simple circuit like the one below can be used to test for conductivity (ability to conduct). If an object is placed in the gap (shown by a question mark) and the bulb lights up, the object is a conductor of electricity.Insulation is an object’s ability to prevent (stop) conduction. Insulators are objects that do NOT allow thermal energy or electrical energy to flow through them easily. Insulators are useful for keeping hot things hot, or cold things cold. Examples of insulators include: Plastic, rubber, glass, wood and paper. Physical Properties Match the correct term with the correct definition Mass The amount of matter in an object. Measure on a balance in grams, does not change. Volume The amount of space an object takes up. Measure in graduated cylinder in mL Density Will an item sink or float in water Solubility to dissolve in water Magnetism The ability to attract to magnets Sort the items between insulators and conductors Conductors metals Copper wire metal spoon aluminum foil Insulators paper rubber wood plastic rubber hose Match it! Match each word with its information. state of matter of matter Solid, liquid, gas conductor A material that allows heat or electricity to pass through easily- all metals and water insulator a material that limits or stops heat or electricity from passing through easily- rubber, wood, plastic, etc. more dense sink less dense float In the above image which drink is the most dense, the diet coke at that is floating or the coke that is sinking? diet coke coke neither which layer is the least dense in the above image? green tan orange Look at the above image. Is the image a solution? it is a mixture yes it is a solution no it is not a solution blue By what physical property could the above solution be separated? evaporation color magnetism conductivity what will happen if the sugar and salt is added to the water? no change it will make a solution it will not make a solution Fill in the blank. Matter can change state by adding or removingheat. When heat is added, matter can change from solidto liquid or from liquidto gas. When heat (thermal energy) is removed, matter can change from gasto liquid or liquidto solid. The process when water changes to iceis called freezing, when a solid changes to liquidis called melting, when a liquid changes to gas is called evaporation, and when gas changes to liquid is called condensation.
