Electricity and Circuits
Electricity Electrons are negatively charged particles, which transfer energy through wires as electricity. As energy flows through a wire or other conductive material, electrons react with the ions in the wire to transfer energy by force. This allows the energy to be passed on, in a stream of electrons called a current. In a direct current, electrons move in one direction only. In an alternatingcurrent, electrons change direction continuously.Current through a component depends on the resistance of the component and the potential difference of the component. The potential difference is also known as the voltage, and is measured using a voltmeter.A way to measure the potential difference is using the current and resistance.V = I x Rwhere potential difference (V) is measured in volts (V), current (I) is measured in amps (A), and resistance (R) is measured in ohms (Ω). Electric Circuits Energy flows around a circuit as a current.Different parts of the circuit, called components, have different properties that allow them to control, use, or change the current. Common circuit components are represented in the image below. Symbol Sorting Sort the components based on their function in a circuit.
