אבימלך ומשל יותם
אבימלך ומשל יותם Please watch this video of me telling the story of Avimelech, Gidon's son and the mashal that his half-brother Yotam tells to the people of Shechem and then answer the questions below based on the story. Why does Avimelech specifically come to the city of Shechem to ask them to appoint him as their king? How much money do the people of Shechem give to Avimelech? What does he do with the money? How does Avimelech kill the 70 sons of גדעון? Which son of גדעון escapes? Fill in the blanks based on the mashal (story) that Yotam tells the people of Shechem. Yotam tells the people of Shechem a mashal, a story about the trees. The trees decided they wanted to appoint a king over the forest. So they went to the olive treeand asked him to rule over the trees. The olive tree refused because he likes making oil to honor Hashem and people. The trees then asked the fig tree to rule over the trees and the fig tree refused to give up its sweetness to rule over the trees. They asked the grape vineto rule over the trees and the grape vine refused to give up making wine to gladden people. So the trees asked the thorn to rule over them. The thorn said if you truly want me to rule, come rest in my shade, but if not let a fire come out and consume all the trees of the forest. What is the nimshal (the parallel in real life) to the story that Yotam told about the trees? What does Yotam do when he is done sharing his mashal and nimshal with the people of Shechem?
