We are going to start the first part of our next unit, addition. There are many strategies to add and you may recall some from 2nd grade. We are going to start with a strategy that has many names, but they all describe the same thing. As a third grader and well as a mathematician we need to remember to use the appropriate language or terms. So before we start I want you to stop and think, do you remember what the numbers you add are called? The numbers you add are called addends, it even has the word add in it. What about the answer to an addition problem, do you remember what that is called? The answer to an addition problem is called sum. Here is a little song to help you remember or recall addends and sum. You might think you are too old for this song, but who knows it might help you remember. This video does a great job at expalining how to use the break apart method or the split strategy. In this strategy you will have to decompose the addends or numbers you add, which is the same as saying you will need to put the addends in expanded form to add. This video also shows the standard algorithm or the traditional way to solve addition problems as another strategy and to double check.
