Using Scale Factor
Part 1: The arboretum has a garden exhibit that is a model of a real garden. The scale factor is 8. If the garden scale drawing is 3.25 feet long, how long is the real garden? If the garden scale drawing is 2.5 feet wide, calculate the actual width. Calculate the perimeters and areas of the scale drawing and the actual garden. Scale Drawing Actual Garden Perimeter = Perimeter = Area = Area = Compare the perimeter and areas. What relationship exists? Part 2: While you were at the Arboretum, you received a map of the hiking trails. You can use the following scale to calculate the length of various trails. 1.5 inches : .25 mile While you were there over the weekend, you had lots of time to hike the Oak Tree loop. If it measured 30 inches on the map, how long was it? Set up a Proportion. During the week, you had a shorter amount of time and could only walk around Lake Acorn. If it was 2.25 miles, how many inches was it on the map? Set up a Proportion. While taking a break, you noticed a 25 foot flag pole cast a 12.5 foot shadow. Nearby, a magnificent Tulip tree cast a 20 foot shadow. Draw a picture. Height of Tulip Tree = 40 feet
