Master math properties! Identify commutative, associative, distributive, and identity properties.

Decide what property is being used in the equations shown. Click the the problem and choose the category from the drop down menu. Commutative Property 5 x (7 + 4) = 5 x (4 +7) f(5) = 5(f) 7 + (3 x 5) = 7 + (5 x 3) y + 5 = 5 + y Changing the order of the numbers in an addition or multiplication problem does not change the answer. Associative Property 4(9 x 5) = (4 x 9) x 5 (6 x 5) x 2 = 6(5 x 2) 8 + (4 + 2) = (8 + 4) + 2 12 + (4 +9) = (12 + 4) +9 When adding more than one number, the grouping of the numbers doesn't change the answer. Distributive Property 6(10 + 5) = 6(10) + 6(5) 9n + 9k = 9(n+ k) Multiplying a sum by a number is the same thing as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products. 5(x - 2) = 5x - 10 3(2 + 1) = 6 + 3 Identity Property Adding 0 to a number does not change its value. Multiplying a number by 1 does not change its value. p(1) = p 4+0 = 4 z + 0 = z 21 x 1 = 21
