Commutative Property 5 x (7 + 4) = 5 x (4 +7) f(5) = 5(f) 7 + (3 x 5) = 7 + (5 x 3) y + 5 = 5 + y Changing the order of the numbers in an addition or multiplication problem does not change the answer. Associative Property 4(9 x 5) = (4 x 9) x 5 (6 x 5) x 2 = 6(5 x 2) 8 + (4 + 2) = (8 + 4) + 2 12 + (4 +9) = (12 + 4) +9 When adding more than one number, the grouping of the numbers doesn't change the answer. Distributive Property 6(10 + 5) = 6(10) + 6(5) 9n + 9k = 9(n+ k) Multiplying a sum by a number is the same thing as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products. 5(x - 2) = 5x - 10 3(2 + 1) = 6 + 3 Identity Property Adding 0 to a number does not change its value. Multiplying a number by 1 does not change its value. p(1) = p 4+0 = 4 z + 0 = z 21 x 1 = 21
