Breaking things apart Sometimes, we have to break something into parts so we can share, or we have to divide up a set of things evenly so everyone gets a fair share. The math words and numbers that help us talk about breaking a whole thing or a set of things into equal parts are called FRACTIONS.FRACTIONS = a part of the whole or a part of a set Click on the blanks and choose which word you think fits. 1) Mya and Madison both want the last cookie in the cookie jar. Mya says, "Madison, how about we split it evenly? Here, I'll give you a half."2) Lamb asked Aryan how far he had played through the new video game. Aryan had finished 1 level out of 3 levels. So he said, "I'm about a third of the way through the game."3) Arjun asked Ms. Cho what time it was. Ms. Cho saw looked at the clock and saw that it was 11:15 am. She said to Arjun, "It's a quarter past eleven."4) Aveline and Tanisha were playing a place value math game. Tanisha asked Aveline, "What's the place value of 2 in the number 5.2?". Aveline answers confidently, "The 2 is in the tenths place." She scored a point!5) Abby and Prisha are baking cupcakes. Abby looks at the recipe card and sees "1 cup of sugar". She says to Prisha, "Next, we add one third cup of sugar."6) Noor and Mannat are lined up to buy a freezie at the school fundraiser. A large freezie costs 50 cents. They are planning to split the large freezie. Mannat says to Noor, "Let's split the cost! I'll put in 25 cents - do you also have a quarter?" The Parts of a Fraction A fraction is an interesting type of number because of how we write fractions. It is kind of like a code! The top number in the fraction is called the NUMERATOR and tells you how many parts you are counting. The bottom number in the fraction is called the DENOMINATOR and tells you how many equal parts there are in the whole. Numerator or Denominator? Deacon brought 3 large pizzas to class to celebrate his birthday. Yum yum! Some students were away, so only 2 large pizzas were eaten. If we wrote a fraction about HOW MANY PIZZAS WERE EATEN which should be the numerator and which should be the denominator? 2 3 Shahad made a rectangle chocolate chip cookie to share with her siblings! She cut the rectangle cookie into 10 equal pieces, so each person could have 2 pieces. If we wrote a fraction about HOW MUCH COOKIE EACH PERSON GETS TO EAT, which number should be the numeratorand which number should be the denominator? 2 10
