Why were camels important to the development of trade in Africa? The first empire in Africa was known as the Kingdom of Ghana. They became wealthy by trading gold and salt. Ghana fell to the Mali, which would become the second empire in the region. Sundiata was the leader of Mali, and due to the wealth of the gold and salt trade, they grew powerful. When Sundiata died, Mansa Musa took over the Mali empire. Mansa Musa maintained control and power by dividing the empire into provinces with appointed governors. After Mansa Musa died, the Songhai became the third empire in Africa. They eventually fell do to the influence of gunpowder. Where was gunpowder created? What types of goods were traded in Africa?
