Assignment 3: How did colonists hurt their relationship with the British?
Discover how colonial actions and British policies strained relations, leading to conflict. Learn about protests and propaganda!
What rights do you have? When is it necessary to declare your rights? What are you supposed to get in return for paying taxes? In Nevada, we elect people to represent us in the federal government. Why isn't it okay for California to represent us? The colonists respond... In response to British policies, some colonists began harassing British tax collectors—emissaries of the king. Victims of tarring and feathering were often paraded around town as an additional form of public humiliation. The victim pictured here was Boston Commissioner of Customs, John Malcolm, who was tarred and feathered twice. How do people pay taxes to the government today? What happens if you don't pay taxes? Based on the image above, what do you think happened at the Boston Massacre? Do you think the colonists did anything to anger the British soldiers? Why can this painting be considered an example of propaganda?
