Fought between: Ibrahim Lodhi BaburDate of battle: 21st April 1526Causes of the battles:1. Ibrahim Lodhi was the 3rd ruler of the Lodhi dynasty in Delhi Sultanate. He was a very arrogant ruler who never missed a chance to insult his nobles ministers in the court.2. Once he insulted Dilawar Khan, a minister in his court after which Daulat Khan(Dilawar’s father) invited Babur (descendent of Timur) to attack Delhi end Ibrahim’s rule.3. Babur was the king of Farghana in Afghanistan and was looking for a chance to invade India. After Daulat Khan’s invitation support he marched towards Delhi. On his way from Afghanistan to Delhi, he conquered Punjab was met by Ibrahim Lodhi at Panipat before he reached Delhi.Battle of Panipat:1. Babur’s army was smaller but had fine artillery whereas Ibrahim Lodhi had 20 thousand soldiers.2. Babur was a brilliant strategist who managed to defeat Ibrahim’s large army with meticulous planning strategies.3. Hearing of the size of Ibrahim's army, Babur used the tactic of Tulghama which meant dividing the whole army into various units, viz. the Left, the Right, and the Centre. The Left and Right divisions were further subdivided into Forward and Rear divisions. Through this, a small army could be used to surround the enemy from all sides. The Centre Forward division was then provided with carts which were placed in rows facing the enemy and tied to each other with animal hide ropes. Behind them were placed cannons protected and supported by mantlets (a bullet proof screen on a vehicle) which could be used to easily manoeuvre the cannons. This tactic made Babur's artillery lethal. The cannons could be fired without any fear of being hit, as they were shielded by the bullock carts held in place by hide ropes. The heavy cannons could also be easily traversed onto new targets, as they could be manoeuvred by the mantlets which were on wheels. Babur referred to this method as the "Ottoman device" due to its previous use by the Ottomans during the Battle of Chaldiran in AD 1514.4. Babur made use of cannons in the battle which made him victorious, firstly because Ibrahim lacked any field artillery, but also because the sound of the cannon frightened Ibrahim's elephants, causing them to trample his own men.Consequences of battle:1. Ibrahim Lodi died on the field of battle along with 20,000 of his troops. With the defeat of Ibrahim Lodhi, the reign of Delhi Sultanate came to an end.2. The battle of Panipat was militarily a decisive victory for Timurids. Politically it gained Babur new lands, and initiated a new phase of his establishment of the long-lasting Mughal Empire in the heart of the Indian Subcontinent.3. Babur changed the face of Indian warfare by introducing the use of gunpowder cannons to Indians. Video of the firstbattle of Panipat. Click on the link after you finish reading the passage.
