In the mid 1800's, deposits of gold, silver, and copper were discovered in the West. Towns quickly grew. These "boomtowns," as they were known, were good for the growth of businesses. When mineral deposits dried up, the economy of these towns failed. Miners moved on in search of new deposits elsewhere. Some boomtowns then became "ghost towns."
