Proclamation of 1763 The Peace Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War. As a result, all lands east of the Mississippi River were given by France (land claimed by France was known as New France) to Britain (England). The lands west of the Mississippi were given by France to Spain. Proclamation of 1763, an English law at the end of the French and Indian War in North America, mainly intended to appease the Native Americans by checking the westward movement of settlers on their lands. After Indian grievances had resulted in the start of Pontiac’s War (1763–64), British authorities determined to subdue colonial rivalries and abuses by dealing with Native American problems as a whole. It forbade settlement on Indian territory, ordered those settlers already there to withdraw, and strictly limited future settlement. For the first time in the history of European colonization in the New World, the proclamation formalized the concept of Native American land titles, prohibiting issuance of patents to any lands claimed by a tribe unless the Indian title had first been extinguished by purchase or treaty. Although not intended to alter western boundaries, the proclamation was nevertheless offensive to the colonies as undue interference in their affairs. As a result of building more forts following the Pontiac Rebellion, Britain began to pass laws that angered the American colonist. One example of an unfair laws was the passing of the Quartering Act. This law stated that American colonist were required to house, feed and provide certain items such as blankets and candles to soldiers living in North America. The English Parliament also passed taxes to help pay for the large debt caused by the French and Indian War. Many colonist began to question whether it was right to be taxed without representation, leading American colonist to protest.
