The colony of Pennsylvania was founded in 1681 by William Penn, a Quaker leader. Quakers are a religious group who preach acceptance, non-violence, and equal rights. The Quakers did not have freedom to practice their religion in England, so William Penn and other leaders searched for a way to colonize America. William Penn, whose father was a well-respected general, was able to convince the king to grant the Quakers the rights to settle in what would become Pennsylvania (named after General William Penn). The Quakers established the city of Philadelphia, which became a center of religious and cultural diversity. In contrast to how the Puritans treated people with different beliefs of culture, the Quakers granted people equal rights and did not support slavery. The New England Puritans, on the other hand, did not tolerate different beliefs and would punish people who questioned their ideas or did not follow their strict rules. The Middle Atlantic colonies were known as the Breadbasket colonies because they produced so much wheat and oats. The Quaker oatmeal company, which was created in 1850, used William Penn's face as a mascot because he was the leader of the Quakers who grew so much of those crops. The economy of Pennsylvania was based on what? Cultivation of grain Mining iron and copper Fishing Building ships with the available timber from the local forests How were the Quakers different from the Puritans to the north? Quakers believed in slavery, but treated everyone else equally.Puritans did not believe in slavery, but did not allow equality.
