Use this review to help you fill out the following boxes in the Virginia section: Jamestown, joint-stock company, economy, cash crops, and agriculture. Jamestown was first established in 1607 by a joint-stock company called The Virginia Company. The purpose for settling Jamestown was to make a profit for the joint-stock company. A joint-stock company is a company owned by many people for the purpose of making a profit. The Jamestown colonists were not prepared for their journey. Many of the colonists had no valuable skills, and refused to do any hard labor. The colony quickly began to struggle and ran out of supplies. Making the situation even worse, the colonists fought with the local Native American tribe called the Powhatan. Tribe members would kill any colonists who dared to leave the safety of the fort surrounding Jamestown. The Starving Timewas a harsh cold winter when the colonists starved and resorted to cannibalism for survival. John Rolfe's arrival saved the colony, as he brought more supplies and better leadership. Rolfe made deals with the Powhatan, planted and successfully grew tobacco, and helped Jamestown become a wealthy colony. The colony became so wealthy that they purchase 19 African slaves in 1619 to help them harvest tobacco, a cash crop. A cash crop is a crop produced for its resale value rather than for use by the farmer. VIRGINIA HOUSE OF BURGESSESRead the text below, then watch the video to review what you have read. The bold lines will help you write your summary. With its origin in the first meeting of the Virginia General Assembly at Jamestown in July 1619,the House of Burgesses was the first democratically-elected legislative body in the British American colonies. (This means it was the first government body where members were elected by the people!) About 140 years later, when George Washington was elected to the House, the electorate (voters) was made up of male land owners.Voters and burgesses (member of the House) had to beat least 21. The colony was not always peaceful, though, as the strict and intolerant puritans of Massachusetts tried to limit the Catholic's religious freedom. A mini civil war broke out in Maryland as Puritans repealed a Toleration Act, which protected the beliefs of all Christians, and tried to take control of the colony. Catholics regained power of Maryland, but had to work diligently to pass religious freedom acts in order to protect their beliefs. NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINAThe Carolina colonies were established as one colony in 1663 by 8 proprietors, or owners. These 8 owners were invested in the colony as a way to make a profit. The Carolina colony was planned out with a constitution, which detailed how the government would control the very large colony. However, the settlements within the colony were so far apart that they came to be known as North and South Carolina. Wars with Native Americans and territory disputes with Virginia, as well as separate local governments, drove the two sections of the colony apart. In 1712, the Carolina colony officially is split into North and South Carolina. GEORGIA Georgia was the last of the thirteen original American colonies established by England. The colony was founded by General James Oglethorpe in 1732. Oglethorpe envisioned a colony which would serve as a haven for English subjects who had been imprisoned for debt (debtors). General Oglethorpe imposed very strict laws, disagreed with slavery, and thought a small farms were more appropriate than the large plantations. Another reason for the founding of the colony was as a buffer state to defend the southern British colonies from Spanish Florida. Oglethorpe imagined a province populated by "sturdy farmers" who could guard the border; because of this, the colony's charter prohibited slavery. The ban on slavery was lifted by 1751.
