Das Perfekt (regular forms)
Master German Perfekt tense! Practice regular verb forms & past participles.
Review:In English we can use different tenses to talk about the past:I ate. I have eaten. I was eating. In German, allthose can be expressed with the PERFEKT.The form is very similar to the English present perfect tense (e.g. I have eaten). The basic regular form uses habenas a "helping verb". It is called that because it does not mean anyone has or owns anything, but merely "helps" express the past.Habenis conjugated to match the subject (e.g. ich habe) and we use the past participle of the "meaning verb" (e.g. gespielt). The meaning verb is the one actually describing the action. To form the regular past participle, we add the prefix ge- and the suffix -tto the stem of the verb. The stem is the infinitive (basic form) of the verb without the ending -en (or -n).infinitive > stem > participlespielen > spiel> gespielttanzen > tanz> getanztwandern >wander>gewandertREMEMBER!If the stem already ends in a -t, you have to add-etarbeiten >arbeit>gearbeitetIt is important to use BOTH, haben + past participle, to form the Perfekt. If you do not use haben, it would be like saying "I eaten", which might be quite misleading! When you write a sentence, haben stays with the subject and the past participle goes to the very end of the sentence!eg. Ich spiele Videospiele. > Ich habe Videospiele gespielt.Ich spiele Videospiele am Computer. > Ich habe Videospiele am Computer gespielt.
