Latitude and Longitude
Introduction - Please Read Latitude and longitude are lines that that go across, and up and down on maps. They exist only on paper! There are no lines on the actual ground that you can see. Latitude Lines of latitude run parallel to each other around the earth. Latitude lines are called parallels of latitude. The equator is the 0 degree line of latitude. The other lines of latitude go north and south of the equator. The North Poleis 90 degrees north and the South Pole is 90 degrees south. The equator divides the world into two hemispheres - the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. A line of latitude is always north or south, except 0. Latitude matches with climate. Longitude Lines of longitude start at theNorth Pole and travel tothe South Pole. Lines of longitude are called meridians. The 0 degree longitude known as the Greenwich Meridian and the 180 degree line called the International Date Line divide the earth into the Eastern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere. Longitude divides the Earth into time zones. Watch the following video clip - Latitude and Longitude How can we locate places on the earth? What are lines of latitude called? What are lines of longitude called? Complete the following passage using these words - line North centre degrees angle zero rotate Equator time Imagine we could cut the Earth exctly in half along the theoretical line we call the Equator. The flat cut surface is what we call the Equatorial Plane. The middle of that plane in the Earth's core and its angle is zero degrees because it is the absolute centre of the planet. To pinpoint a location on the Earth's surface, we imagine drawing a linebetween zero and the point being described. The line creates an angle of elevation above the Equator or below it. These are what we call angles of latitude. Because the Equator is a circle of 360 degrees, angles of latitude are measured in degrees of an arc, minutes of an arc and seconds of an arc. These minutes and seconds are not the same as ordinary time measurements. They relate to the time it takes for the Earth to rotate. The maximum latitude angle possible is 90 degrees north or south from the imaginary zero point of the Earth's core. There are two such locations the North Pole and the South Pole. Northern or Southern Hemisphere Place the following countries into the correct hemisphere - Australia, Greenland, South Africa, Canada, Finland, Peru, England, New Zealand Northern Southern Look at a World Map and name the following countries that lie near the Equator - Central America - E_r , C_a, V_a Africa - K_a, U_a, Democratic R_c of C_o Asia Pacific: B_o, M_a, I_a Longitude and Latitude Song Watch the following clip up until 2 mins to learn more about longitude and latitude. Complete the following passage about longitude using the following words - longitude half London single imaginary curved meridian reference west measured circumference coordinates Angles of longitude are determined by the use of imaginary lines or (meridians) running from the North Pole to the South Pole. They start at a single point (the North Pole), bulge out around the Earth's curved surface, then return to reach a single point at the South Pole. A longitude number shows the point where a certain meridian meets the Equator. Every meridian crosses the Equator, so the Equator is the point of reference for all longitude measurements. Zero degrees north and 90 degrees east are the coordinates of the North and South Poles. These lines are measured from the central line, which is located at Greewich in London, England. The global standard of time measurement als has Greenwich as its base reference. The Greenwich meridian is considered to represent zero degrees longitude. These angles are measure from zero to 180 degrees east or west of the Greenwhich Meridian. The location 180 degrees east of the Greenwhich Meridian is the same as the location 180 degrees west because 180 degrees is half ofthe Equators total circumference (360 degrees) This line at 180 degrees is called the International Date Line. Eastern or Western Hemisphere Using a map place the following countries in the Eastern or Western Hemisphere - Morocco, Egypt, Argentina, Turkey, India, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Japan, USA Austria Eastern Western Label the latitude and longitude of the following locations - ** Use the word 'degrees' instead of the symbol.
