Those of you looking to extend your thinking should try and complete the management section as well from your own thoughts. The Causes(What causes the problems both in the UK and in China?) Mr. Roberts loves Apple products – particularly his new iPhone and iPad! A few months ago, Yuan lived with his family in northern China – friends told him he would earn more working for Foxconn Mr. Roberts is happy to pay a lot of money to have the latest Apple product when they are released Yuan works for Foxconn, who manufacture many parts of Apple’s iPhone and iPad products Yuan lives in Shenzhen, in the Guangdong Province of China Apple chose Foxconn because they can hire a very skilled yet cheap to employ workforce Yuan earns around 2200 CNY (£220) a month – or 8 CNY (79p) an hour - Mr. Roberts earns £2050 a month! Mr. Roberts would like to see more Apple products used in education to improve learning The Effects(What problems are there for Yuan and his colleagues?) Yuan would like to quit his job and open a hotel management company, but he will have to work a lot longer to earn the money Since Ma Ziangqian died, there have been 12 other suicides due to the poor working and living conditions at Foxconn When Apple are about to launch a new product, like the iPad 3, Yuan will have to work for even more hours! Yuan sits on a stool, 6 nights a week, for 12 hours manufacturing the hard drives for Apple products Chinese law says that a person can only work 36 hours a month overtime – Yuan will often work twice that much! Yuan had a friend, Ma Xiangqian, who committed suicide because he could not cope working in the Foxconn factory Yuan has complained about military-style drills and verbal abuse by superiors if they do not complete their work properly Yuan says that doing the same thing all day can make him numb Now you have completed the grid, on the next page you should write an extended answer to the question ‘Why is Mr. Roberts’ life in Cambridge affecting Yuan Yandong in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province of China?’ You should aim to have an introduction, a paragraph or two explaining the causes and problems you have identified.
