Plate Tectonic Review Watch the video as a review of plate tectonics. What is plate tectonics? Earth's plates move because of convection currents in the mantle, where currents move the plates around. Earth's plates move because of invisible forces that pull the continents and oceans to the core of the planet. Earth's plates move due to radiation waves in the core which cause the land to vibrate. Divergent are place where plates spread apart Convergent are place where plates come together causing mountain ranges. Subduction are places where one plate sinks under another Oceanic Crust Part of the Earth's crust that the ocean sits on Continential Crust Part of the Earth's crust that the continent sits on Transform are places where plates slide sideways past each other. Convergent Divergent Transform Sea-Floor Spreading Review Match each term with the corresponding mid-ocean ridges divergent sea floor spreading Deep ocean trenches subduction crust sinks into mantle How are sea flood spreading and subduction related? As a trench is made the sea floor spreads and a giant hole is created causing the plate to make a mountain and forms new continents every 10 years. As the sea floor diverges apart, it pushes the plates away causing them to converge on the other side where one plate subduction of one plate under the another plate, creating a trench. As sea floor spreading creates a trench the old rock pushes out new rock forming new continents. The old rock is pushed up from inside the core causing subduction in the mantle Earthquakes The place where the earthquake occurs is called the the quakecenter the Richter scale the epicenter What causes Earthquakes? the movement of Earth's tectonic plates the pull of the moons gravity the intense vibration of the earths core What is the instrument scientists use to measure the strength or intensity of the Earthquake is called a seismophone Seismograph seismoputer
