Write a word or a number in each gap. The editor James Murray started work on the first Oxford English Dictionary with his team in 1879. When they had only reached the word ‘ant’ five years into the project, he realized he had seriously underestimated how long it would take. The main problem with English is that it is a living language. Today, there are about 60 people in Oxford working on the dictionary. They use three methods to try and identify new words: firstly, a collection of words called the Oxford English corpus, secondly, a reading programmemade up of readers all over the world and finally, the hundreds of databases contained on the internet. Like a dictionary, a thesaurus is a reference book; the difference is, that a dictionary is used to look upthe meaning of words, while a thesaurus is used to look for words with a similar concept. The person regarded as the author of the best known thesaurus in the English language is a man called Peter Roget (1779–1869). He published Roget’s Thesaurus in 1852 after working on it during his retirement. His work was published in one volume containing 15,000 words, but since then each edition has been much larger. Today, you can access the thesaurus online. Once you have switched on your computer, all you have to do is log on to the site and type in the word you want to explore. You will be rewarded with a screen full of synonyms and antonyms related to your search.
