The person regarded as the author of the best known thesaurus in the English language is a man called Peter Roget (1779–1869). He published Roget’s Thesaurus in 1852 after working on it during his retirement. His work was published in one volume containing 15,000 words, but since then each edition has been much larger. Today, you can access the thesaurus online. Once you have switched on your computer, all you have to do is log on to the site and type in the word you want to explore.
