SWEATERS FOR ELEPHANTSI If you visit the city of Mathura in northern India this winter, you will be surprised to see twenty elephants wearing colorful sweaters. These elephants live in the Mathura Elephant Care Center. Because of the cold winters in northern India, workers at this center were worried about the elephants. So they asked the women in nearby villages to find a way to keep the animals warm.II The women from the villages had an original idea. They volunteered to knit very large sweaters for the elephants. But knitting sweaters for elephants is a big job. So the women worked in teams. It took a team of six women about one month to finish each sweater. The teams worked on the sweaters for many months. They chose bright, cheerful colors for the sweaters. They also made big red socks for the elephants.III The elephants seem very happy with their new sweaters and socks. Visitors to the center think the elephants look funny. They say they look like they are wearing pajamas. The project definitely helped the elephants but it also helped the women from the villages. They became good friends because they worked together for so long.IV The Mathura center takes care of elephants that are sick or very old. Many of them suffered from cruel owners before they came to the center. There are many more elephants that are suffering so the center is planning to take in fifty more elephants this year. That is why the center will need more workers.VFortunately, the knitting project is getting a lot of attention. Reporters and photographers from all over the world visit the center.
