It's not the school work!
Read the text and then answer the questions that follow.Teenagers say that the worst thing about school is the work - the lessons, the homework and the exams, but for many teens there is something else that can be an even greater source of stress.Amanda between classes: "Is there something wrong with my hair? Why are those girls looking at me? Oh my god, I know my hair doesn’t look right! I need to check out my hair in the bathroom. No, I don't have time! Damn!"The biggest stress in teens' lives is often the social pressure they feel at school.Katie: "People are always judging you; walking down the hall or sitting in class. Everybody looks at you. The kids at my school can be quite mean - Someone teased me about my pimples yesterday!”When they see people looking at them, they imagine the voices inside those people’s heads: "Look at her. She thinks she looks cool? How can she come to school looking like that?"Maybe they're being paranoid. Maybe the other kids aren't really judging them all the time. Let's ask one of the kids in the hall:"What are you thinking about that kid over there?"David: "I’m not thinking anything about him. I’m actually thinking about the Fortnite game that I played last night with my friends”.Even if teens aren’t judging each other all the time, the feeling is still real, and sometimes it can be too difficult. They go to school late and some try to avoid school completely.Sarah in the morning: "I'm feeling dizzy today. I can't go to school. I'm really sick. I didn’t sleep well last night."This stress from social pressure also has a negative effect on teens’ study and homework habits. Distractions are everywhere, especially in today’s digital world. Procrastination can be a problem for every teen, but smart phones make it so much harder today.Andrew: “I have so much homework today, but my friends are going to see a movie together tonight. I really don’t want to miss out! I’ll just do my homework on the school bus tomorrow.”And what about teens’ sleep patterns?Michael in the first lesson: “I am so sleepy this morning. I stayed up until 1 am playing Fortnite last night. I’ll just sleep during Mr. Matthews’ Science lesson. He never notices! 1. What is the main point of this text? 2. What did each teen say?
