Roald Dahl was born in Landaff, South Wales, on 1 September 13th, 1916. After graduating from high school, he took jobs in Newfoundland and Tanzania before 4 enlisting in the Royal Air Force at the beginning of World War II and serving as a fighter 5 pilot.After the war, Dahl began writing fiction. His first children's book 'The Gremlins' was a 6 flop, but he had a bestseller in the adult story collection 'Someone Like You'. In 7 1953, Dahl married the actress Patricia Neil, who would go on to win an Academy Award. They had 8 five children, one of whom died in childhood, before they divorced three decades 9 later.In 1961, he published his first successful 10 children's book 'James and the Giant Peach'. He would practice his stories on his own children before 11 bedtime, and many classics followed, including several that were adapted into motion pictures; 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Fantastic Mr Fox', 'The Witches' and 12 'Matilda' and 'BFG'.Dahl died at the age 74 in 1990.
