Black Rights Problems in the south of the USA NASHVILLE. Years ago, many people were put in jail for breaking unfair laws. Now, they will have a chance to clear their names from the records. From 1870 to 1964, many southern states had unfair laws. These laws divided African Americans and whites. The laws were known as Jim Crow Laws.They said that whites and blacks should be divided. Blacks could not ride in the front of buses. They could not eat in the same restaurants as whites. Black and white children went to different schools.During this time, many people protested peacefully against the laws. Many were arrested or put in jail. In the late 1960s, these laws were ended. People's criminal records from that time, however, still remain. Two states are passing new laws. These laws give pardons to people who were arrested for breaking Jim Crow Laws. Their criminal records will be cleared. It will be as if they were never arrested. Alabama passed the first law. It is known as the Rosa Parks Act. Tennessee will pass a law like it soon.Both states would give pardons for people who are no longer living. Even Rosa Parks could be pardoned. Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955.
