Writing an Affirmative Motion for a debate
Activity 1 Below is the first half of a sample speech arguing FOR the motion (the Affirmative side). Listen to the speech once. In groups, read the speech and complete the diagram that follows. Share your answers with the class. Affirmative captain: Lades and gentlemen, I am here to present the motion “Schools should start classes one hour later”. By “school” here, we mean Concordia international School, and by "starting classes one hour later" we mean that school should start at 9:15 am while keeping the dismissal time the same.We all know that lack of sleep can cause a number of short term and long term problems, such as the inability to focus during classes, not having enough time to eat breakfast and not getting enough hours of sleep during the night. Many students argue that early and long school hours, omg with endless amounts of assignments prevent them from forming healthy sleeping habits and also cause a number of negative effects on their mental and physical health. If this issue goes unchecked, this generation will not be able to live a well balanced and healthy life and their chances of success will be lowered. Problems identified by the speaker In the boxes, write down the key problems identified by the speaker. According to the speaker, what will be the result if schools do not follow the suggestion? Activity 2 Below is the next half of the speech focussing on the effects of the solution proposed. Listen to the speech once. Read the speech and complete the diagram that follows. Share your answers with the class. Affirmative captain We propose to solve the problem by changing the school schedule to start one hour later. If we begin classes at 9:15, students may use that extra hour that they have in the morning to get more sleep and also eat a healthy breakfast. If students wake up too early, they may not feel energized because of lack of sleep and feel too rushed in order to get to school on time. This rush may prevent them from eating breakfast. This, along with their lack of sleep will make it harder for them to perform well at school. With the extra hour, students may feel more relaxed and prepared for a full day of learning. Moreover, sleeping longer will positively affect their physical health as doctors recommend that teens sleep for 8 hours minimum while their mental health will also improve because they will feel less stressed as cortisol levels, which lead to stress, are often highest in the mornings. Therefore, it is our team's suggestion that school starts at 9:15 in the morning and end 3 in the afternoon. Thank you. According to the speaker, what are the effects of their proposal? In the boxes, write down the key effects identified by the speaker. Activity 3 Now it is your turn to CREATE your own motion and definition of terms. Work in pairs and discuss. My team's motion: Write in a speech format. eg) Ladies and gentlemen, I am here to present the motion “Schools should start classes one hour later”. By “school” here, we mean Concordia international School, and by "one hour later" we mean that school should start at 9:15 am while keeping the dismissal time the same. Activity 4 In the boxes, write down 4 main reasons why you propose this motion. What negative outcome will happen if the motion is denied?
