It’s a statue of a standing woman (the Roman goddess Libertas) wearing a crown. She’s holding a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left hand. The statue is 93 metres high from the base to the top of the torch and it weighs 204 metric tonnes! When it was built, the statue was the colour of copper – a mixture of red and brown. The reason why it is now green is that copper becomes green when it’s outside.They built it in France, and the French people gave it to the USA as a gift. The designer, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, designed the statue’s face to look like his mother’s! After they built it, they transported it to the USA in 300 pieces on the French ship ‘Iréve’. Then, builders put it together and it opened to the public on 28th October, 1886.The Statue of Liberty is very important to Americans. When people travelled on ships across the Atlantic Ocean to live in the USA, ‘Lady Liberty’ was the first thing they saw.
