Mr. Know All- Introduction- British Colonization
1. Colonization- British Colonies in India In the later 18th century Great Britain and France struggled for control, partly through Indian rulers but also by direct military intervention. The defeat of the formidable Indian ruler Tipu Sultan in 1799 decreased the French influence. This was followed by a rapid expansion of British power through the greater part of the Indian subcontinent in the early 19th century. By the middle of the century the British had already gained direct or indirect control over almost all of India. British India, consisting of the directly-ruled British presidencies and provinces, contained the most populous and valuable parts of the British Empire and thus became known as "the jewel in the British crown".On the one hand, Indians benefited from British colonial rule. They were exposed to modern goods and modern transportation. Their education and healthcare increased and they won protection from the British. On the other hand, the British controlled the Indian government and economy but mainly, the Indians were seen as “half” citizens. It is important to note that British colonization of Africa coincided with the era of scientific racism as represented by social Darwinism (survival of the fittest). The British believed that because they had superiorweaponry and were therefore more technologically advanced than the Africans, that they had a right to colonize and exploit the resources of the Africans in the name of promoting civilization.Britain had many colonies in Africa: in British West Africa there was Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Southern Cameroon, and Sierra Leone; in British East Africa there was Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania and in British South Africa there was South Africa, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Nyasaland (Malawi), Lesotho, Botswana, and Swaziland.
