Observation & Feedback; Reflective Practice & Assessment Support
The aims for this seminar are: 1. Recap the prominent themes from the lectures on observation feedback and reflective practice2. Analyse the themes in relation to your own practice (remember that reflection is critical to your 2nd assignment)3. Evaluate both assignments Observation Feedback1. Knowing your athlete Reflective Task (30 minutes) Note that this task is very closely linked to your 2nd assignment, especially if you choose to write your reflection in relation to observation feedback.Firstly, consider and describe one specific incident from any previous coaching practice in which you provided feedback. This could be either a positive or negative experience. Secondly, relate your practice to an element of the content we covered in the observation feedback lecture. This could consider:a) the observation analysis processb) sport-specific knowledgec) the type of intervention chosend) use (or overuse) of positive feedbacke) use of specific or ambiguous feedbackf) positive re-enforcementg) cognitive load / skillful neglecth) knowing your athleteWhat were the consequences (either positive or negative)? Thirdly, what are your conclusions here? Consider:a) would you do this again?b) if not, what would you do instead (and why)?c) would you apply this to any other situation, or was it context-dependent?Utilise research from the lecture and LZ page to support your answer. Assessment One Type: Session Plan and JustificationTitle: Individually plan and justify a 30-minute session which demonstrates the application of theoretical coaching considerationsLength: 1000 wordsWeighting: 50%Submission Deadline: Monday 4th May 2020 by 9amReturned with feedback by: Monday 25th May 2020 Tasks 1 Plan a session on a chosen theme which incorporates one behaviourist task and one constructivist task. This can be related to any sport. The plan should consider how theoretical considerations from the taught content can be reflected within the practical delivery. 2 The plan should consider the session’s learning objectives, as well as detailing the progressions of activities, and opportunities to differentiate the activities. 3 Each task within the plan should clearly establish the pedagogical approach being taken and how this will be achieved by the coach. For example, you may wish to include direct instruction when applying the behaviourist approach, and the use of questions, problem-solving and group-based learning which you would use when applying the constructivist approach. 4 In 1000 words, justify why you have used the approaches and activities that you have planned. This justification should embed research throughout, which provides definition and rationale for using both the behaviourist and constructivist approach. Rubric Criteria 80% + Classification Knowledge and Understanding of concepts and the use of literature Excellent knowledge of behaviourist constructivist approaches. Work displays excellent levels of comprehension and independent learning that extensively utilises a wide array of modes of learning sources. Critical Analysis and Interpretation Exceptional interpretations of behaviourist constructivist approaches, which display high levels of analysis. Extremely clear and well thought out argument. Constructing Academic Work Excellent level of academic writing and expression of ideas related to behaviourist constructivist approaches. References are completed correctly and adhere to the Loughborough College guidelines. Assessment Two Type: Reflective EssayTitle: A reflection upon the theoretical considerations from a previous session you have deliveredLength: 1000 wordsWeighting: 50%Submission Deadline: Monday 25th May 2020Returned with feedback by: Monday 15th June 2020 Tasks 1 Review the video footage of previous coaching sessions to identify one specific incident which demonstrate the application of theoretical considerations. 2 Introduce the purpose of reflective practice in relation to contemporary research into reflection-on-action. Provide a brief overview of your session and explain the theoretical model that will be applied. 3 Using a theoretical model, analyse one specific incident from the practical session, in which a theoretical consideration either was applied or could have been applied. You should consider how research into coach-athlete relationships, motivational climate, leadership, observational feedback, or power dynamics may be applied. 4 Draw conclusions from your findings and develop a clear action plan which demonstrates how you can use these theoretical considerations to improve your practical coaching. Summarise the benefits and limitations of using reflective practice on-action. Rubric Criteria 80% + Classification Knowledge and Understanding of concepts and the use of literature Excellent knowledge of coaching theory and reflective practice. Work displays excellent levels of comprehension and independent learning that extensively utilises a wide array of coaching theory and reflective practice sources. Development of Professional/ Vocational Practice Exceptional development of practice and reflection. Rationale for practice and strategies for development are extremely detailed and informed. Constructing Academic Work Excellent level of academic writing and expression of ideas related to coaching theory and reflective practice. References are completed correctly and adhere to the Loughborough College guidelines.
