His instructor has given him a checklist of things to do when he takes his test. He said,'Check the car seat. If the seat istoo far back, you will find it hard to reach the pedals. And if you can't reach the pedals easily you won't drive smoothly. Check the mirrors. If you can't look in them, you won't see the traffic behind or beside you.' Steve just thought, 'I think I'm going to fail. Not enough lessons. If I had had more time, I would have taken more lessons.' The test was a bit of a disaster. Afterwards he spoke to his instructor. Read and complete the text below. Fill each gap with oneword. Write the answers in the box below. Crime is a subject on which people have strong opinions. Some believe society creates criminals, others think the prison system is at fault. Others still say it is individuals who are to blame. The truth is that we don't really know what makes people turn to crime, but it seems likely that it is a combination of the above factors, ratherthan a single cause. There is, however, one thing we can be sure of: when crime falls- something which admittedly doesn't happen very often- every politician around will claim credit for it.President Clinton was the first to do so. He claimed his government was responsiblefor falling crime rates in the US. 'We are making a difference,' he declared. 'Our neighbourhoods are safer, and we are restoring the American people's confidence that crime can be reduced. At first sight, one might be tempted to believe him, particularly if one looks at the situation in New York. Here, many neighbourhoods which used to be crime-ridden are certainly safer. Last year, fewer than 1000 people were killed in the Big Apple. This is the lowest recorded number since 1968.
