The Outsiders Chapter 10

Dally has spent a lot of time in jail and around the police. He knew exactly what would happen when he pointed a gun at them. Why do you think he did it? When he gets home, he finds the rest of the Greasers in the house and tells them that Johnny is dead and that Dally is going to blow up because he can’t take it. The phone rings. It’s Dally calling, saying that he’d just robbed a grocery store. As the gang runs to meet with him, Ponyboy notices that he can’t run in a straight line. The police arrive just as the gang is about to reach Dally. Dally pulls a gun from his waistband and Ponyboy remembers him saying that it’s not loaded. He points it at the policemen , and they shoot him. Somebody yells as Ponyboy suddenly passes out. When he wakes up, he learns that he has a concussion from being kicked in the head. He says he was delirious and was asking for their Mom, Dad, and Sodapop. Ponyboy worries that he didn’t ask for Darry and about making up school and asks Darry if the state is going to split them up. Darry responds that he doesn’t know and gives him the book Gone With the Wind, saying that Johnny wanted him to have it. Soda comes in and says that he kept saying he didn’t like bologna whenever they tried to feed him. He reassures Pony that he did ask for Darry when he was sick.
